Ropes, Swings and Things- Physicality at Forest School

Ropes, Swings and Things- Physicality at Forest School

Mar 14, 2025 | Forest School Training

At Coast and Forest Education, we believe in the transformative power of physicality in the great outdoors, where every tree, rock, and stream becomes a part of our learning landscape.

Here, children engage their bodies and minds through playful exploration and hands-on activities that stimulate curiosity and foster resilience. Climbing, balancing, and running through the natural world not only enhance physical skills but also nurture essential social connections, encouraging teamwork and problem-solving in an unstructured environment.

Each experience is a stepping stone towards building confidence, as children discover their strengths and capabilities amid the wonders of the forest and coastline.

We use a number of simple knots and hitches to construct ladders, swings and the installation of hammocks and slacklines to enhance these spaces where maybe natural spaces and affordances are not available.

On our CPD sessions learn how construct these structures, how to increase the physical opportunities and affordances even with tool use, consider the risk benefit of getting participants off the floor and discuss the developmental benefits of wide ranging physical activities.

We have number of CPD session already booked in this year check out the opportunities here

A Forest School Training review that validates your hardwork

A Forest School Training review that validates your hardwork

A lovely piece of Forest School Leader Training feedback and reflection taken from a participant’s portfolio on a 2024 course.

“I really valued how Adrian modelled the Forest School ethos and approach by immersing us within it in terms of no pressure or time limits and incidental discussions around aspects that cropped up. This reduced the overwhelming anxious feeling and made me feel like I was just gently absorbing new knowledge. This continued throughout the training process with new skills being introduced at appropriate moments and being given multiple opportunities over subsequent sessions to practice and refine these, often working with the other participants as a learning community to find success and master these new skills.”

I have always strived to allow participants time to embed the knowledge learned. My Forest school courses are 10 days long for this reason. yes, you can find courses online, cheaper and shorter but ask yourself what are you missing if your course is only five days or submitting videos of practise?
Do you want to be part of the learn or part of the churn?

Year Six Participant Engagement and Growth at Forest School | Trends and Reflections

Year Six Participant Engagement and Growth at Forest School | Trends and Reflections

Jun 19, 2024 | education, forest school, forest school training, outdoor education

As the term starts come to an end, we will say goodbye to our year six participants who we have been engaging, playing, fostering, feeding and skill sharing for two academic years. There is no doubt they have changed, matured, grown, friendships developed and people it is a real pleasure to spend time with.

It has been interesting to watch their engagement across these two years.
Whilst reflecting on these two years it is noticeable how trends for activities have waxed and waned, it seems right now some are very hungry for physical activities, leaf bashing well the leaves are better now, and building with wood, making badges and beads too. The usual physical activities such as swings, climbing, hammocks are there too.
Anyone else find activities come and go?
